Sporting Charleroi – KVC Westerlo

PREVIEW

Playing in the Black Country has always been a difficult task for our Kemphanen in recent years. Since our last return to the top flight in 2022, we have played four times at the Stade du Pays, winning only once (in 2022), when Reynolds, De Cuyper and Kyan Vaesen scored the goals.

Last season

We lost 4-3 after a spectacular match. We fell behind early on, but with two goals from Isa Sakamoto and one from Matia Frigan, we suddenly found ourselves with a comfortable lead after 55 minutes of play.

With the support of the crowd, the Zebras were able to turn this situation around and secure a 4-3 victory.

Current season

After their strong performance last season, they were one of the first teams to start the new football competition this season. They did so in the Conference League against Swedish side Hammarby. After a 0-0 draw in Sweden, the score was also level after 90 minutes in Charleroi, and they were defeated in the 120th minute. They then got off to a good start in the league. After seven match days, they were in sixth place with 12 points, after three wins, three draws and one defeat in La Louvière. This was followed by five defeats, although they did manage to win at home against Anderlecht by the smallest of margins.

Mutual transfers

Who remembers Bison? In 2013, he was loaned to our club. His real name was Harlem-Eddy Gnohéré, and he earned his nickname thanks to his strong physique. He ended up playing 14 matches for our Kemphanen, scoring once in a 2-0 victory against Boussu-Dour.

Toni Brogno moved from Westerlo to Charleroi in his second spell (January 2004). The late Ukrainian Sergii Omelianovitch (2001) and cult goalkeeper Frank Frans (1999) also made the switch from Charleroi to Westerlo, and in 1998, then left-back Mario Fasano moved from Westerlo to the Hainaut club.
