Young Devils in ’t Kuipje
Young Devils win twice at ’t Kuipje, Norman Bassette decisive on both occasions
KVC Westerlo had the honour of hosting the Belgian U21 national team twice this past week. As part of the qualifiers for the 2027 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, head coach Gill Swerts’ side faced both Belarus and Wales at ’t Kuipje. Two matches, two wins, and on both occasions a KVC Westerlo player found the net.
Against Belarus, it was Norman Bassette who scored the decisive 1-0 from the penalty spot. On Tuesday evening he did it again: early in the match, our striker put the Young Devils ahead against Wales, once more good for a 1-0 victory. Belgium therefore remain top of their qualifying group, with direct qualification for the Euros within reach ahead of the final match in Denmark.
Norman proves week after week that he feels at home at ’t Kuipje. Seeing him show that in the national team shirt as well, in front of his home crowd, makes us especially proud.
Other current and former KVC Westerlo players were also selected. Arthur Piedfort and Romeo Vermant featured for the U21s, and Amando Lapage was on the bench against Wales.
It is a fine recognition for our club to see so many players with a KVC Westerlo past or present in the national youth teams.
KVC Westerlo would like to sincerely thank the RBFA for their confidence in hosting these important qualifiers at ’t Kuipje. We are proud that the choice once again fell on our stadium, and the fact that the Young Devils won twice here with our own players in a leading role makes it all the more special. Thanks also to all the supporters who came out to cheer on the U21s, and to our staff and volunteers who ensured both evenings ran smoothly.
We wish the Belgian U21 team every success in Denmark!
