Westerlo stops Union winning streak
Before the start of the match, there were some notable changes in the Westerlo starting eleven. Goalkeeper Van Langendonck and central defenders Yameogo and Seigers were given a place in coach Bob Peeters’ starting eleven. Westerlo received the fresh champion Union SG in their own ’t Kuipje. Our club had the necessary gifts and congratulations to congratulate the champion on their strong season.
It was clear from the start that no gifts were going to be handed out on the pitch. Westerlo tried to play along and did not let themselves be put off balance. This resulted in a 1-0 lead just before half-time. After some good combination play Kurt Abrahams was able to kick the ball in at an acute angle, out of the reach of goalkeeper Moris.
After the coffee break we saw a less self-confident Westerlo between the lines. Union took advantage of the situation and pressed forward. First Undav was able to offer Van Der Heijden the equaliser via a low cross. Teddy Teuma then almost crowned himself match-winner with a wonderful free kick. He curled the ball over the wall with his left foot. Baris Alici put a stop to it in the end. Van Eenoo brought the ball into the box to Atabey Çiçek. The Turkish striker played the ball to his compatriot Alici, who extended the ball into the goal with a wonderful drive. The final score was 2-2 after the final whistle of referee Dierick.
Westerlo grabbed an important point in the battle for that coveted second place.
