Westerlo gets important win against RFC Seraing

In still an empty ’t Kuipje, Westerlo kicked off the second part of the league with a home game against RFC Seraing. An important game for our club to underline its ambitions. After a festival of goals, KVC Westerlo was the last to cheer when Atabey Çiçek headed in the winning goal. 4-3 was the final score, propaganda for 1B as our coach called it.

Coach Bob Peeters had a place in the starting line-up for right back Seydoux and striker Freddy Plumain. The striker made it 1-1 on the half-hour, after Jallow had opened the scoring for the visitors with a fine header. Jallow was the most active player for Les Tigres during the first half. Plumain’s equaliser came after a lovely through ball from Abrahams.

Time for Seraing to press the accelerator again. Jallow was able to work the ball into the goal after a cross from the right flank. This time he headed the ball in with his left foot. Perdichizzi tried to save the ball from the line, but his help came just too late. The half-time score was 1-2. Those who watched the game of national champions Club Brugge earlier in the day (they eventually won 3-2) know that everything is still possible in the second half.

Five minutes into the second half, Léo Seydoux went for a walk and passed the ball back to Dierckx, who did not hesitate and turned the ball with his left into the far corner. The score is tied again! Just after his great goal, Dierckx is brought down on the right flank. Ref Debeuckelaere doesn’t hesitate for a second and draws a second yellow card and red for Kilota.

With 11 against 10, Westerlo goes in search of the lead. Lukas Van Eenoo picks up the ball on the right flank and throws it in front of goal. With a clever header Vetokele managed to outsmart keeper Dietsch. A 3-2 lead and a possible win are within reach for our teammates. Just at that moment we had to watch out. Seraing was cunning and they mercilessly punished a defensive error by our team and equalised again.

In minute 87, Baris Alici had a huge chance to make it 4-3, but he failed to make the most of it. His shot went past goalkeeper Dietsch but was fended off on the line. It was a nail-biting game until the last minute when Van Eenoo threw the ball into the net with his left. He finds Atabey Çiçek who deviates the ball into the goal and so is tonight’s match winner. A satisfying victory that allows Westerlo to overtake Seraing and move up to second place in the standings.
