Westerlo won a vital duel today at Lommel SK for the battle for 2nd period! At the end of the match, Christian Brüls conjured up a lovely free kick out of his shoes so that our ruffs remain in the lead in the battle for a ticket to the promotion final to first class!

The competition start was almost complete for Westerlo. Lommel still woke up while our ruffs showed a lot of drive. After a few minutes of play there was immediately a deviated ball from Keïta which Svedkauskas had to devise in corner kick. The corner kick that followed shortly after brought renewed danger. This time it was Vetokele who was allowed to head free on Lukas Van Eenoo’s cut ball, but found the bar on his way. A lot of pressure but no goal so far. The next goal opportunity was for Christian Brüls, who cut in from the left flank to try and outsmart the Lommel goalkeeper with a targeted space ball towards the bottom right, although he still had a handsome parade to turn the shot around.

On the half hour suddenly threatened Lommel SK. Van den Bogaert let himself be thwarted in a duel with Sanyang, who was only allowed to go after Berke. The Westel goalkeeper narrowed his angle well and the Sanyang stranded his attempt. Shortly after that Lommel got the best chance in the game, Henkens sent Sanyang deep with a cunning ball that in turn did not get the ball into the goal with goalkeeper Berke Özer. Third good time they thought Lommel, Ideye was found on the edge of the sixteen. Lommel’s striker turned freely towards goal and placed the ball in the right corner. Berke was still there with his fingertips to avoid a Lommel lead.

The second half brought a slower pace than we saw in the first half. Westerlo crawled back a bit more and gave Lommel SK more space to play. Both teams each got a good chance to open the score. For Westerlo, Buyl was sent down the street but he decided from a sharp angle. For Lommel, there was a free header opportunity on which goalkeeper Berke Özer had a fantastic reflex.

Everyone in the stadium agreed, whoever scores today wins the match. In minute 83 Abrahams was allowed to walk through the Lommel defence. He was wrongly stopped just before half moon. The ideal place for specialists Brüls and Van Eenoo to show their skills. Brüls claimed the ball and kicked it in FENOMENAL via the left goalpost. A wonderful goal put our ruffs on roses towards a difficult victory at the neighbours from Lommel SK.

With just under 10 minutes left on the clock, coach Bob Peeters decided not to take any more chances and dropped Ghandri to throw more duel force into the team to do everything in his power to hold on to the lead. And he did! Westerlo wins a difficult game and stays at the head of the rankings in the second period. The ambition to get the highest possible result has been expressed so we’re ready to give everything we need for 2 more games on the way to a possible promotion final against OH Leuven.

Next rendezvous on February 22nd at 17h00 in ’t Kuipje to give RE Virton a match. We call on you to fill ’t Kuipje once more and shout to our 11 ruffs on the field for another victory! And all together we will go for it in the coming weeks!
