U21: KEMPHANEN THROUGH TO 1/2 FINALS IN CUP

It was an unforgettable evening in Kortrijk. For the first time, the WestLB succeeded in advancing to the semi-finals of the Belgian Cup. In an exciting match, they beat Kortrijk 1 -2. Now, a nice poster awaits them: Anderlecht, Racing Genk or Club Bruges are the possible next opponents.

The match had a rather long study round. Kortrijk threatened first with a shot on goal.(20′) The Westel team’s emotions flared up for the first time when Wally Fofana was flagrantly brought down inside the backline. The referee ignored the call and decided against a penalty. (22′) Kobe Heyns, today central in defence, managed to block a Kortrijk shot into a corner just in time. Jitse Vandermotten kept his nets intact with a fine save. Just before half-time Westerlo took the lead. Kobe Heyns sent the perfect deep ball to Daan Driesen from his own half of the pitch. Daan was able to continue at speed, evaded the goalkeeper and calmly played the ball into the goal. 0 – 1 (42′)

Soon into the second half the Kemphans scored a second goal. Daan Driesen managed to play the ball into the path of Zion Buekers. Zion crossed and Zoran Pelic, who was well followed, could kick the ball into the corner of the goal. 0 – 2 (57′) A shot by Rouben Nguyen was caught by the Kortrijk goalkeeper. Two slips in the Westelse defence allowed Kortrijk to get back to 1 – 2 (69′) It was an exciting end. A free kick by Kortrijk went over the Westel goal. For a second time the referee made a point of not whistling a clear penalty on Lars Neyens. (76′) Kortrijk increased the pressure, the mood and the tension went crescendo. Jitse managed to prevent the equaliser. He saved the ball in a corner (85′). Fatigue was making itself felt. Some players suffered from cramps. The referee ordered an extra 7 minutes of play, but the Kemphans did not budge an inch and cruised to victory. Lively scenes took place after the final whistle.
