Preview KVC Westerlo – Lierse Kempenzonen

Football is not always fair. If you look at the chances, ball possession and number of successful passes of the past two away games, we could easily have scored 6 out of 6, and Sunday’s Kempish derby would have looked very different.

Team KVC Westerlo

The last 20% are the hardest. We have now experienced this in person. But let us flashback for a moment. If we had said in the beginning of the season that we would have a 7-point lead on number two on game day 24. Who would not have immediately signed up for that?

Everything that could go against us was against us in those last two away games. Now we are dependent on what the score will be on Sunday at 17.45hrs on the field of RWDM. Losing points to the Brabanders means that if our Kemphans win, we can celebrate.

Sunday is the penultimate home game on the programme. In the previous 12 editions of this season, there were 7 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss. Only in 2 home games we could not score: on game day 1 against RWDM and on game day 17 against Deinze. On the other hand, we scored 5 clean-sheets in Het Kuipje, but conceded an average of 2 goals in those other 7 games. Another interesting fact is that of our 21 home goals scored, only 3 were scored in the first half. No fewer than 16 goals fell between minute 45 and minute 75.

Nine Kemphans have scored in the Kuipje this season. We list them briefly: Daci (6x), Van Eenoo and Bernat (3x), Foster, Vaesen and Dierckx (2x) and Van Den Keybus, De Cuyper and Perdichizzi who each scored once. The possibility that we will see Pietro on the field on Sunday is great. The past 3 games he had to take a seat on the penalty bench, but this is now over.

Captain Lukas Van Eenoo is the only player to have started in all competitions at the moment, and did you know that he has been decisive 99 times in his career? He has scored 51 goals and provided 48 assists. When will the 100th be scored?

Team Lierse

The Kempenzonen were overjoyed with their catch-up win. You’d do less than that. The rescue is as good as in. Virton – if they win all their matches – can still come level, but the goal difference is too big to make up for it. But of course you never know. It was also their first victory after losing 3 in a row, and that with 20% ball possession, you have to be able to do it. But that is the beauty of football.

Just like us, they are more difficult to score after the new year. Van Acker scored only the fifth goal in 8 games. Goalkeeper Teunckens on the other hand only had to turn around 7 times to fish the ball out of the net. It is clear that the ex-Kemphaan is an added value for this team. Did you know that he was called up by national coach Roberto Martinez not so long ago? Between October 2019 and 2020, he sat on the bench with our Red Devils for 3 games. He then went to try his luck in Cyprus at Larnaca, before settling down in Lier via a diversion at Dutch side RKC Waalwijk.

Kenneth de Schuer Schuermans will also be there again this time. Last Wednesday he was suspended for one match day due to an excessive amount of cards. Nice to know is that on game day 4 he was the official top scorer of the league with 4 goals. On matchday 10, he added another. He remains the best scoring defender in the league.

28.08.21 3-2  ⚽️Dierckx, Vaesen, Bernat

31.01.21 2-0  ⚽️Vetokele, Cicek

23.08.20 0-0

Quentin Pirard comes to the Kuipje for the third time this season. The two previous meetings ended in a draw, namely against RWDM (0-0) and against Virton (1-1). On the road we had him twice as well, these were each time good for a victory: Mouscron (1-2) and Deinze (1-2). The only match he whistled for Lierse this season was the spectacular match at RWDM (3-3).
