Preview KV Mechelen – KVCW

The comments after the home win against Standard were laudatory. Six out of six in a hot Kuip in a nice spectacle match, spiced up with 6 goals. The next assignment is clear: look for the first points away from home behind the Kazerne in Mechelen.

KVC Westerlo

In the 4 previous games, coach Jonas De Roeck already had 17 different players play in the starting eleven. Five of them started each game: goalkeeper Sinan Bolat, defenders Edi Jordanov, Rubin Seigers and Maxim De Cuyper and captain Lukas Van Eenoo. The strength of our team is that we are a team with qualities and a lot of fighting spirit. They are also guys who want to fight for each other. If you can bring that combination every week, you can achieve great results.

The current top marksman is also in our ranks. Igor Vetokele leads -together with 9 other colleagues- the rankings with 3 goals, but if you compare the number of playing minutes, he is number one. Igor currently gets 151 playing minutes, the Portuguese of Anderlecht Fabio Silva gets 3 goals in 220 minutes.  The rest have even more playing minutes.

Striker Erdon Daci had a successful operation last Tuesday and is currently the only player who cannot be selected.

KV Mechelen

The Maneblussers had to look for a new coach at the beginning of the season. During their search, they briefly came across our current coach, but he declined the job. Then, they arrived at the Dutchman Danny Buijs. After his active career, he immediately became coach of the last club where you could admire him as a player, the Kozakkenboys. After 4 years, he made the switch to Eredivisie club FC Groningen where he stayed for 4 years as well, finishing successively in 8th, 9th, 7th and 12th place.

The first 2 games of the season were lost against Antwerp (0-2) and Oostende (2-1). In the next 2 games they didn’t lose and won twice a clean-sheet, Union (3-0) and Cercle Brugge (0-0). In the type team we find 9 Belgians: goalkeeper Coucke, defenders Van Hoorenbeeck and Bolingoli, a trio of midfielders with Van Hecke, Lavalée and Schoofs and the most forward players Hairemans, Ngoy and Storm. These are then complemented by Dutch right-back Sandy Walsh and French central defender Thibaut Peyre.

Did you know?

  • Goalkeeper Gaëtan Coucke (ex-Genk and Lommel) was already selected for our Red Devils on 18 November 2020.
  • Sandy Walsh was born in Brussels, has the Dutch nationality, but can also play for the Indonesian national team.
  • Thibaut Peyre became victim in 2017 of a supporter who threw a plastic cup of beer at him.
  • Boli Bolingoli is the cousin of Romelu and Jordan Lukaku
  • Captain Rob Schoofs has played the most games for the KV: 168 and was decisive 53 times (22 goals and 31 assists).
  • Geoffry Hairemans can regularly be seen in Tuur Dierckx’s group of friends.
  • Nikola Storm was named as attacking reinforcement at both AA Gent and KRC Genk
  • Striker Julien Ngoy left Belgium at the age of 16 to sign a contract with Stoke City. Seven years later, he returned to Belgium to play for Eupen. After 64 games and 11 goals, he signed for KV Mechelen this season.

The Limburger Bert Put was appointed to lead this match. This season he already came into action in 2 previous matches. On matchday 1 (Zulte Waregem – Seraing) and matchday 3 (Antwerp – OH Leuven). Both games were won by the home team. Remarkable is that in both games hardly any yellow cards were drawn, 5 in total.

For the statistics fans: for the referee it is the seventh game that he will lead behind the Kazerne. The home team won 5 games and drew once. Westerlo he whistled three times in the past. This was once in Het Kuipje (Beerschot 1-1) and twice on location (Seraing 0-2) and the “watered down” cup game in Charleroi (1-0 loss).
