One size too small

After a hopeful 2nd half last weekend at KMSK Deinze the assignment tonight was simple. To match that level and try to show from minute 1 in the match. The previous confrontation in the Dudenpark ended in a scoreless draw. Are there any goals in ’t Kuipje tonight?

Talk about a dream start! Westerlo gets a fast free kick that ends up with a long ball at Tuur Dierckx. He disengages his man and puts the ball sharply in front of him. A well positioned Atabey kicks the ball past goalkeeper Moris.

That joy, however, was short-lived. In minutes 9 and 11, the Union front line gets too much space from our kemphanen which they eagerly take advantage of. After more than 10 minutes of playing soccer, our ruffs are ready to chase. 1-2.

The pressure from Union persists in the first 25 minutes and our ruffs won’t be in the game anymore. Coach Peeters steers heavily and tries to get the engine running again.

Just before halftime another mistake in the back of the defense of our kemphanen and Union punishes mercilessly. Casper Nielsen dives into the back of Simon Paulet to enter the 1-3. Union keeps pushing the gas pedal and makes it 1-4 at minute 45! There’s a real task waiting for our ruffs in the 2nd half to straighten it out.

Just after rest, they make a change at our kemphanen. Captain Van Eenoo stays in the dressing room and Kader Keita has to fight more in midfield to get her hands on the game.

Westel is trying to get a grip on the game, but at the moment he can’t find the schwung of last weekend against Deinze. Union trumps our kemphanen in all facets at the moment. The first defeat of the season seems near.

Also the raids of Lloci and Abrahams did not turn the tide tonight. Our kemphanen were one size too small against a cunning and fresh Union SG tonight. Work to be done towards the double confrontation Friday and Monday against that other Brussels club RWDM.

In the press chat afterwards, coach Bob Peeters mentioned that we were overloaded for the first half hour. The level of Union at the moment is better than that of our club. We have our feet on the ground after today. 2nd half we had a bit more balance in midfield but as a team we are not strong enough at the moment to put the fire on Union. The level that Union reaches at the moment is the level that we want to reach as well. It is important to get the players sharp for the double confrontation against RWDM next week.
