One of the best games we’ve come to play here
In the legendary Dudenpark, the tension was cut in advance in the duel between the 2 title favourites of this season. Union SG lived up to that role with flying colours, our ruffs had a bumpy course so far but are looking up again after 3 consecutive victories. The last race of 2020 became the test for Westel. It became “one of the best games we’ve ever played here”, coach Bob Peeters mentioned afterwards in front of the camera. Nevertheless, the Unionists turned out to be a size too big and they are the title favourite this season with already more than 11 points ahead of our kemphanen.
In the beginning of the season, Westerlo played a nice game with a lot of excitement and dedication, but few real goal chances. After 10 minutes Tuur Dierckx was allowed to cut in for the first time. However, his shot was not dangerous for goalkeeper Moris. On the other side Jordanov kicked the ball into the side net on the quarter-hour mark.
After 23 minutes the referee made a first mistake. Undav headed a cross past Berke but the referee had signalled offside. Looking back on the footage we saw that the goal was unfairly disallowed and Undav was indeed on-side. A few minutes later Tuur Dierckx was allowed to cut in again with the ball at the foot, this time the shot was better and Moris was unable to jam the ball. Atabey Çiçek is quick to put the 0-1 on the scoreboard.
For a long time our kemphanen couldn’t enjoy this lead. On the half hour the ball is badly cleared by Antunes. Cochrane can pick up the ball and plays “the killer pass” to Undav who dives well into the space between Biset and Antunes and then pops the ball diagonally in. Huge joy at the bank of Union and redoing everything in this game.
At the beginning of the second half we got a second wrong decision from referee Debeuckelaere and his team. Once again Undav was able to score from a cross from the side and once again we saw the flag go up at the touch judge. Once again, the repetition is unjustified. Westerlo gets away well. After chances for Van Eenoo and cochrane, Union gets a penalty 10 minutes before time after a Biset mistake on Lapoussin. Ref Debeuckelaere will have thought 3 times that this decision was not correct either. Compensation because of the 2 unfairly disallowed goals seems to be. In the first instance, the penalty phase was caused by the poor elimination of our ruffs. Undav put himself behind the ball and made his 2nd of the evening.
Westel enters the winter break with 2 points behind RFC Seraing. Let’s recharge our batteries and then fight for second place, the highest possible for this season. That second place still gives a chance for promotion after a jump-off match against the number 15 out of 1A. The first league game after the winter break is scheduled for 24 January against… RFC Seraing.
