Match report R. Union SG – KVC Westerlo

Today we headed to the Joseph Marien stadium where we had to play against Union. It was a typical autumn day with rain showers which undoubtedly was not going to make the match any easier. In the starting eleven, Rubin Seigers was again in the starting line-up. Jordanov, Vaesen and Fixelles also came to the kick-off.

Line-up KVC Westerlo: S. Bolat, B. Reynolds, R. Tagir, R. Seigers, E. Jordanov (75′ T. Dierckx), M. De Cuyper, N. Madsen, M. Fixelles (84′ L. Mineiro),, H. Akbunar (57′ T. Van den Keybus), L. Foster, K. Vaesen (75′ I. Vetokele)

line-up Union: A. Moris, I. Kandouss, C. Burgess, S. Van der Heyden, B. Nieuwkoop, J. Amani, S. Lynen, T. Teuma, L. Lapoussin, D. Vanzeir, V. Boniface.

First half

Union immediately went on the attack from the right flank through Bart Nieuwkoop. A few minutes later, it was our Kemphians who were able to counter on the breakaway. Fixelles provided the first shot on goal but Moris had no problems being able to stop the ball.

In minute 14, Foster was sent into space by Vaesen. Foster managed to shake off Burgess and then take out on goal, but his shot went wide. In the opening quarter, there were no really dangerous attempts by either side.

Vaesen also managed to get in front of keeper Moris once. He kicked towards the far corner, but his shot also went wide. Union also managed to get in front of the Westel goal but could not trouble Bolat. The shots mostly ended up over or wide of the woodwork.

Just before half-time, our Kemphans took the lead. Foster was able to break through from the left and leave the defence behind him. After this, he placed the ball perfectly past Moris, 0-1. A few minutes later, the whistle sounded and the players went into the dressing room. A score that was certainly not unjustified after a first half where we saw few chances.

Second half

A few minutes after the start of the second half, we had the chance to make 0-2. Moris played a poor ball up to Van der Heyden after which Fixelles was able to intercept. Vaesen out on goal but saw his shot cleared off the line.

For a moment our Kemphans came into danger. Bolat came out too far, allowing Vanzeir to pass him. Fixelles was able to recover the ball, preventing Union from taking advantage of the opportunity.

After 57 minutes of football, Akbunar was allowed to rest. Thomas Van den Keybus was sent onto the pitch to strengthen the midfield. A few minutes later, the game was briefly interrupted due to fireworks in the home box.

Union put high pressure and managed another chance through substitute Adingra, but the shot fortunately went wide of the goal. Here we got away well for a while.

The final minutes were spent fighting for every ball. Union seemed absolutely unwilling to give up and went for the tying goal with 100%. This allowed us to get a counter in the final minutes of the game. Foster played the ball well to Vetokele but he saw his shot stopped by Moris.

Then it was Union who managed to work the ball into the goal via Nilsson. VAR briefly intervened to look at the goal, but it was eventually approved.
