Line-up KVC Westerlo: S. Bolat, E. Jordanov, R. Seigers, P. Perdichizzi, M. De Cuyper, R. Neustaedter, L. Van Eenoo, T. Van den Keybus, T. Dierckx, K. Vaesen, E. Daci

Line-up Cercle Brugge: W. Lisboa, J. Daland, B. Popovic, R. Decostere, K. Denkey, D. Hotic, S. Miangue, L. Lopes Da Silva, H. Van Der Bruggen, T. Somers, A. Ueda

First Half

The starting eleven is made up of the same players as last season. Pietro and Rubin are still a duo at the back. Up front we find Kyan Vaesen and Erdon Daci, but what is noticeable is the absence of Lyle Foster who starts on the bench.

Both teams want to start the season with a good start and start the game eagerly. In the first ten minutes, the West side kick a goal twice from outside the penalty area. First Tuur Dierckx and then also Kyan Vaesen took aim. Both shots were just too soft to cause any real danger.

Cercle continued to fight hard in the duels and saw two yellow cards in the first 30 minutes. Boris Popovic even gets a second yellow and is sent off the pitch by referee Wesli De Cremer. We play for an hour with 11 against 10.

We can almost immediately benefit from this advantage. Erdon Daci passes the ball to Kyan Vaesen on the edge of the penalty area. Kyan outmanoeuvres his man and reaches for goal but his shot is blocked by goalkeeper Lisboa.

In minute 39, our boys get rewarded. Erdon Daci sees his shot initially stopped but gets the ball back into his feet. He took it out and hit the ball hard under the bar from close range, 1-0. With this score we went into the dressing rooms.

Second half

The players showed a lot of effort right from the start of the second half. Tuur Dierckx reached out with his outside foot but saw his shot go just past the post. Thomas Van den Keybus also tries his luck from distance. Just like last season and in the preparation he hits the ball with a rocket towards the far corner, but goalkeeper Lisboa just manages to get his fingertips to it.

Kyan Vaesen also gets a lot of free space again and ends up in a 1v1 situation with the goalkeeper. He kicks towards the far corner, but again goalkeeper Lisboa saves.

In minute 64, coach Jonas De Roeck chose to bring in Lyle Foster. Lyle took over from Kyan Vaesen and immediately showed his speed.

Our Kemphans completely outplayed Cercle Brugge and constantly dominated the game. It seems only a matter of time before the lead is doubled. A few seconds later it seems to be done. Lyle Foster passed the goalkeeper but hit the post. He then shoots the ball into the goal but the goal is disallowed.

Westerlo played the game out calmly and gave Cercle hardly any space to create any danger. Igor Vetokele put the 2-0 on the scoreboard from close range. Books to the wind, the 3 points remain in ’t Kuipje.
