Goal festival in ’t Kuipje
Before the start of the game against Deinze, you could feel the tension in ’t Kuipje. After the slip-up last week in the Edmond Machtens Stadium, the task was clear today. We had to win. Competitor RFC Seraing also managed to brush aside Lierse Kempenzonen earlier in the day, so the gap became 4 points. KVC Westerlo knew what they had to do and completed the task with flying colours, sending KMSK Deinze packing with a 4-0 victory. Coach David Gevaert did not even attend the press conference afterwards.
About the first half… KVC Westerlo started well and immediately took the upper hand in the match. After barely 15 minutes the game was already a draw for our team. Van Eenoo was given a lot of space on the left flank. Space that you should not give to the West-Fleming. Van Eenoo cut inside and perfectly served Vetokele who managed to deviate the ball into the far corner. 1-0!
Those who follow Westerlo’s games closely know that Bob Peeters’ troops have been forgetting to play football after taking a lead in recent weeks, and have been crawling back massively. At the press conference afterwards, Westerlo coach Bob Peeters said that he and his technical staff had demonstrated this to the group in recent weeks with pictures. And whether they had understood it! Barely a minute after the 1-0, Cicek had an excellent chance to double the lead, but his shot hit the crossbar. On the half hour mark, Kader Keïta was allowed to start the conversion for Westerlo. The Frenchman dribbled all over the pitch to play Cicek at the right moment. The Turkish goal-getter bumped into a strong Vandenberghe. The ball ended up in the scrimmage at the feet of Keïta who, after a flawless takeover, played the ball into the right corner. 2-0! Just before half time, Cicek headed the ball against the bar again after a corner kick by Van Eenoo.
After the coffee break the first chance was for Deinze. Challouk was allowed to wander down the right flank and painted the ball onto Mertens’ head. The striker headed the ball hard against the right post. This gave Westerlo the scare. Again to the other side. Alici cut inside and dropped the ball in the box. Vetokele had a good header but hit Vandenberghe. The Deinze goalkeeper couldn’t get rid of the ball and Atabey Cicek was in the right place to make it 3-0. After finding the bar in his way twice, Cicek finally hit the target. 3-0!
The spring had completely broken for Deinze and Westerlo played the game out. In the last minutes of the game Christoffer Remmer crossed the ball deep to Cicek. The Turkish striker was in the mood for it, cutting inside to put the ball away in the far corner. Unbearable for goalkeeper Vandenbergh. 4-0!
Westerlo played a strong game and must now continue this line in the duel against Club NXT and direct competitor RFC Seraing. As our coach put it so nicely at the press conference: “one swallow does not make spring”. Come on bantams! And all together!
