Did you know? Union SG

Team Union SG

In goal is the Luxembourg international Anthony Moris. He came over from “relegated” Virton at the beginning of the season. He was voted best goalkeeper of the season. For a while, he was in the interest of OH Leuven, but eventually he opted for Union. This year, he is once again the reliable one. At the back is the trio of Jonas Bager, Christian Burgess and Siebe Van Der Heyden. The first is a Dane who, before coming to Belgium, had only played for one club, Randers FC. He is also an eight-time U21-International of his country. The Englishman Burgess has amassed the most playing minutes as a field player. He only had to miss one match due to a yellow suspension. He always plays the full 90 minutes.

Left winger Van Der Heyden is one of the four Belgians in the starting line-up. In his youth, he played for Anderlecht. After an intermediate step in Oostende and Eindhoven in the Netherlands, he became the regular central man on the left after the departure of Perdichizzi.

On the wings, Guillaume François and Edisson Jordanov play. Both were still on Virton’s payroll last season. François was an old friend of coach Mazzu at Charleroi. Bulgarian Jordanov was born in Rostock, Germany, where he also took his first steps in football. Between 2013 and 2015 he reeled off his matches in the second team of Borussia Dortmund.

In midfield, there is also a trio. Mathias Fixelles is a maid for all work. Only as a goalkeeper and left back he has not yet been drafted. Casper Nielsen has now played 53 matches for Union. Twelve goals he has scored and eleven assists he handed out. Teddy Teuma is the captain of the team. At the beginning of this season, this Frenchman suddenly became an international of Malta. Teddy is also someone who will not withdraw his foot easily.

What about the duo of strikers? Deniz Undav and Dante Vanzeir have scored 34 goals together. Interestingly, Dante was only a substitute in the first two games of the season and Undav only started scoring from game 8.

Coach Felice Mazzu is the captain of the ship. He was at the helm of Sporting Charleroi for seven years. He made sure that the Hainauts grew from relegation candidate to PO1 club. In 2019 he signed a contract at KRC Genk, but was fired after only 21 matches. Mazzu signed a one-year contract with option in Union.

Team KVC Westerlo

At the beginning of the season, expectations were high. This Westerlo team had to go for the title. If you come out on top of your class the season before, and then strengthen your team in every position, it was clear that the team in the Kempen would like to play a series higher.

The start started with a blunder against newcomer Lierse. 0-0 in Het Kuipje. Afterwards our coach criticised the mentality of the players. In game two, on the road against Union, he tried to create a shock effect. No fewer than four players were sent to the bench, and they were not the least of them. Brüls, Abrahams and Dierckx had not done their jobs properly against Lierse and were banished from the starting line up. With hindsight, this was already a warning sign. There was still a win at Seraing, with another clean-sheet, but after that it was all about running after the facts.

The outbreak of COVID ruined the season, but we have to be honest… the lack of mentality and fighting spirit came into play a few times when things got tough. Mathematically, everything is still possible, but in the meantime Lommel have also overtaken us in the rankings. In other words, we are dependent on the results of 2 clubs. Over and out and working on next season.

Of the players who started Sunday’s game against Lommel, 6 are out of contract. Berke Özer, Christophe Janssens, Baris Alici, Kurt Abrahams, Freddy Plumain and Atabey Ciçek will in principle not be seen on the pitches next year. Their contracts are coming to an end. But you never know of course. Coach Bob Peeters has already fielded 24 different players this season. Only goalkeeper Berke Özer played all his minutes.

After Lukas Van Eenoo’s departure, Noël Soumah is the player with the most minutes on the pitch. There are also three players who have worn the captain’s armband during the start of a match: Maxime Biset, Lukas Van Eenoo and now recently Igor Vetokele. The club’s dirtiest player is Kader Keïta. He got a yellow card under his nose six times. He also had to leave the field with two yellow cards in one game (against Club NXT). Right back Léo Seydoux proves his qualities week after week. He is also a player the supporters love to see play. Our Man of the Match statistics show us this.

Pietro Perdichizzi will also have had a different take on the season. Coming over from Union, he started the season with great ambitions. An injury in the preparation slowed his integration a little, but after the New Year he too has found his place. In terms of mentality and fighting spirit, he is an example for many.
