In 2021, our weekly column will be there again. Peter Boons will find some fun and remarkable facts about our opponents and our own team.

RWDM vetted

Coach Vincent Euvrard came at the helm of the club from Molenbeek on 7 December 2020. His predecessor Laurent Demol had lasted 12 games. After the double defeat against Union (2-1) and Lommel (4-0), it was over and out for him. Assistant coach Frédéric Stilmant coached one game after that, at home against Deinze (1-1) . The engine did not really start running since the arrival of the relatively young (38 years old) coach.

In five games (league + cup), they won twice and lost three times. This year, they could not even get a single point.

In goal is Anthony Sadin. This cult hero plays almost every game with short sleeves, so that his many tattoos on his arms show.

In defence, Tracy Mpati, Gilles Ruyssen, Abdoul Karim Danté and Florian Le Joncour are posted. During the winter break, Cédric Yambéré joined the ranks. This tall central defender (1m91) is currently the most valuable player in our squad. His value is estimated at 1.6 million euro and he beats our own Berke Özer on that first place. Yambéré was a fixed value at Al-Ettifaq, a club from Saudi Arabia, for the past 1.5 years, where he also scored three times.

In midfield we have former Kempen captain Nicolas Rommens. Nicolas plays at RWDM with shirt number 94, the year he was born. With his 5 goals, he is currently the top marksman of his club. Most of the time, Mehdi Terki, ex-Lokeren and Glenn Claes, ex-KV Mechelen also populate the midfield. Another familiar face that has surfaced recently is Thomas Ephestion. His passage with our Kemphans was not really a success, so he was loaned out to the Brussels club for 6 months.

The attack consists of Lenny Nangis, Rocha Miramar and Kévin Mayingala Nzuzi Mata. The latter gave us the death blow in the previous confrontation with 2 goals. Rocha Miramar had his best season in 2018/2019 when he played for Lommel. There, he scored no less than 21 goals in 33 games played. He then joined 1A club KAS Eupen. There he made 7 appearances in a whole season. An extra player was recruited in this compartment too. Lucas Ribeiro Costa was a key player for Virton last season. This season he was on the payroll of Charleroi, where he amassed 108 playing minutes in 10 games.

On the bench are mostly Jarno Libert (ex-OHL), left back Bryan Van Den Bogaert and flanker Joeri Dequevy and Yvan Yagan. All of them have already amassed countless playing minutes in professional football.

KVC Westerlo vetted

Bob Peeters had to miss the suspended Kader Keïta against Lommel last weekend. An important pawn that can bring fire to a match. He was due to play a suspended game against the boys from Club NXT. However, as this match was rescheduled, he had to serve his suspension against direct rival Lommel. This was a setback for the tactical plan. In principle, he will take his place again at the expense of his replacement Simon Paulet.

Also against RWDM, a pawn will have to stay on the sidelines. New right back Léo Seydoux was shown a yellow/red card and will have to stay at home for a week. His replacement will most likely be Christoffer Remmer. Or our coach should opt for the more attacking Matias Lloci. The latter is a real training beast. You can usually find him in the gym when the rest of the players have already gone home.

Just like goalkeeper Berke Özer, the rest of the defenders are also known. Noël Soumah and Pietro Perdichizzi are in the centre and Kouya Mabea is on the left. Our Italo-Belgian showed his skills on several occasions against Lommel with a long, perfect cross pass to flanker Tuur Dierckx. On the other side is Ange-Freddy Plumain. This French Guadelouper is rented for 6 months from Turkish club Samsunspor.

Deep in the striker’s box stands Atabey Ciçek. He currently has the best statistics. He has seven goals and four assists to his name. Captain Lukas Van Eenoo also has the same number. Lukas played his hundredth game in the Westerlo jersey against Lommel. He crowned this with a goal, after an assist from Ciçek. As a 9.5, Igor Vetokele is drafted in these days. A man of all trades and always playing in service of the team.

Kurt Abrahams is now on the bench. As one of the first victims of the COVID infection, he is still looking for his best form. Ambroise Gboho has also recovered from his ailments. Maxime Biset will only start if one of the two centre-backs is suspended or injured. However, a replacement has already been recruited in the name of Guy Serge Yameogo. This Ivorian will be hired for 1.5 years. He too has a past with Samsunspor. Baris Alici, Christophe Janssens and Basilio Ndong will fight for the other places on the Westel bench.
