Bob Peeters: We have to continue
Coach a 4-0 victory against Deinze. This was one of our best games this season I think?
Yes, I think we also played a good game against Deinze in the first game here at home after we drew on Friday. I thought the intention was good. The intention was to press where possible and create chances. I think we did that. The only downside was that we should have decided the game at half-time. And then, you know, a ball might fall right. They might as well make it 2-1. I think they get one real chance, if it gets 2-1 there, we might start to backpedal. If you look at the statistics after the game, 21 shots on goal, 12 of which were inside the box. Two times on the bar if I’m not mistaken and some good saves from vandenbergh. So I think we played a good game. But again, now we get 2 games which is going to be tough, both Wednesday and Sunday. and yes this requires confirmation. I saw some or many good things today but we need to confirm that now. One swallow does not make a spring.
The past few games, we’ve come out on top, we’ve gone backwards, but today we kept pressing?
Yes, that is actually a process of weeks, which we have tried to show with images, that we have to continue to build on our own strengths. The only thing is that we are not rewarded. You need to be leading by at least 3 or 4-0 at half-time and then the game is done. That’s why I was very happy when we made it 3-0. At that moment you saw the spring breaking. But we did indeed continue to play compactly with a lot of pressure up front and where especially Igor and Atabey did a lot of work. That’s the Westerlo we want to see. I also know that it’s not always easy, because today we played on perhaps the best pitch in Belgium. That also makes a difference if you want to combine, if you want to play forward. So let’s hope we recover well on Wednesday and get a result there as well.
Léo came in place of Christoffer, but you also brought in two new names. Christophe Janssens and Baris Alici, they also did well today?
Yes, we let them play a friendly in Leuven on Wednesday. They were both on the left side, and I thought our communication at the back was a bit less. Christophe is someone who works very hard. He communicates and if you put Baris in, because it’s his first starting spot. You have to put someone behind him who can communicate, who can coach you. Mabea and Basilio have less of that because they don’t really have English skills either, but I think that worked out well. Léo has already proved that he is a very important player for us and whether Freddy or Tuur or whoever plays for him doesn’t matter. He is very dominant and sometimes we even have to slow him down to say you can’t go deep every time.
